Notes for Tunis Swart DELAMATER
1809:
Tunis Delamater was born in Esopus, Ulster Cnty, NY.97

1835:
Tunis Swart Delamater married Sarah Maria Pough in New Paltz, Ulster Cnty, NY.161

1841:
Tunis’s wife, Sarah Maria Pough, died.160

1850:
Tunis lived in Northampton Township, Fulton Cnty in 1850. The 1850 Census lists the Tunis Dilamatter family as: Tunis, age 40 Farmer; Eunice, age 30; Hellen, age 7, attending school; Frances M., age 5, attending school; Eliza E., age 3; and John, age 3 mths.170

1857:
Tunis purchased land in Fulton Cnty, NY near Hagadorn Mills on 1 May 1857 for ninety-five dollars.171

The county line between Fulton and Saratoga and the township line between Broadalbin and Providence at this point is the Kenneyetto Creek. The old Delamater homestead stood on the Broadalbin Township, Fulton County side of the creek.172

When a boy, Howard F. Reed caught trout in the Kenneyetto Creek at the foot of the hill where the old Delamater house in Fulton Cnty, NY once stood, very near the old bridge where the Hagadorn Mills/Trevet Rd. crosses the creek. He recalled his mother, Bertha Rankie, talking about a “Grandfather Tunis.” As told to Howard F. Reed by his mother Bertha, the Delamater house stood on top of the hill above the Kenneyetto (Broadalbin side of the creek, right side of the road travelling from Broadalbin toward Hagadorn Mills). Currently (1996), this is a trailer court called White Birches. Howard F. Reed remembered an old foundation at this location when he was a child. He recalled all open, sandy fields at that time. He also recalled that the area was called "Delamater Hill" by the "old timers".7 This recollection was verified by a conversation he had with a Mrs. Lasher who was 88 as of 30 Apr 1997 and who lived her married life in the area and also by a conversation with an elderly male resident (name not written down, Howard F. Reed couldn't remember it) of the White Birches Trailer Court on the same day. This elderly man also recalled that the bridge described above was called the "Delamater Bridge. Howard F. Reed recalled that a pipeline from the Amsterdam Water Works crosses this Delamater property and that his father (Harry Reed) was hired to haul pipe for this project to this location."7 The existance of this pipeline is verified by deed dated 7 Jan 1890.173

1860:
The 1860 Census lists the Tunis Delmater family as residing in Broadalbin, Fulton County, NY.95E. E. Brownell also shows Eunice Brownell Delamater as having lived in Fish House, Providence, Northampton and Broadalbin.89

1868:
Tunis was still a farmer at the same location the Town of Broadalbin.174
Tunis’s second wife, Eunice Brownell, died.164

1870:
The 1870 Census169 listed Tunis (age 61) and Cynthia (age 40) Delemater as residing in the Town of Broadalbin, Fulton county (West Galway Post Office), NY. Tunis was listed as a farmer born in New York. Cynthia was listed as keeping house and was also born in New York. Ira Delemater (age 14) was living with Tunis and Cynthia and is listed as a farmer born in New York.

1875:
As of 28 June 1875, Tunis, age 65, and his wife, S. C. (probably Cynthia), age 45, were still residing in the Town of Broadalbin, Fulton Cnty, New York in a frame dwelling worth $400.00. Tunis was still listed as a farmer. They have a boarder, Isreal Paugh (Pough?), age 45, who was a brickmason. 175

1880:
Cynthia and Tunis (age 70) were divorced. Tunis was living alone on the farm and Cynthia was living next door with her daughter and son-in-law, the Wm. A. Lashers. Tunis was still a farmer and Cynthia sewed gloves, a common cottage industry in the Fulton County, New York area.176

1892:
The Trevet Rd. homestead was sold to Albert Lasher on 7 Oct 1892 by Tunis De Lamater and Nellie De Lamater (daughter), both residing at this time in the City of Gloversville, Fulton County, NY.177 Tunis’ stepdaughter (Cynthia’s daughter) married an Albert Lasher.167Cynthia C. De Lamater, is listed in the deed recording the sale of the Delamater property near Hagadorn Mills to A. Lasher. 177

1897:
Tunis died at his daughter’s home on Cranes Hollow Rd. on 17 July 1897. “Mr. Delamater had passed the last few years with his daughters...” and he died “at the home of his son-in-law, John Rankie, about a mile and a half up the Cranes Hollow road.”157

1905:
Cynthia died at 1p.m. The chief cause of death was a fracture of the hip, while the contributory cause was general debility.165 She was living with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Lasher, at the time.167 The information for the death certificate was given by Mrs. Allen Lasher, Broadalbin, NY,165
