193 The recorded cause of death was Cardiopulmonary Arrest.
195 John Berbach, Sr. died from cardiopulmonary arrest as a result of terminal lung cancer and its associated treatments.
An application to the Veterans Administration was made at the time of diagnosis attributing John Berbach’s lung cancer to nuclear testing radiation exposure during “Trinity,” the first “A-bomb” test in Alamogordo, New Mexico, 16 Jul 1945. The request for compensation was denied
204 as his name did not appear on the list of 99 people who were known to be located in shelters 10,000 yards from the point of detonation. However, requests for his exact location and radiation exposure and requests for the location and radiation exposure of his unit were left unanswered. When time allows, these issues should be further explored. (Note also two mistakes in the response letter: name misspelled and the sentence noting response to “Mrs. Olga Burbach concerning her late husband’s exposure.” The response should have been to his son, John Berbach, Jr. who continued the inquiry after his Dad’s death. John, Sr.’s wife Olga had been deceased for years by the date of the letter.)
