Notes for John Walter BERBACH Sr.
1921:
John Walter Berbach, Sr. was Baptized on 4 Sep 1921 at St. Stanislaus R. M. Church, 101 East 7th Street, New York, New York. His Godmother was Ksenia Zhdynowska. His Godfather was Stefan Sulima.194

1948:

Tessie Berbach resided at: 94 St. Marks Place, New York, NY as of February 1948. William and Josie Zimbal also resided at this address at this date. John W. Berbach resided at this address at least until his wedding.202

Around this time, John was a member of the Emblem Boys Club bowling team (see Multimedia images), and was apparently a member of the club. The Emblem Boys club was located at 272 E. 10th St., New York City, New York.

1950:
John and Olga resided at 178 Avenue D., New York, NY as of 2 Sep 1950 at which time they purchased the Huntersland property where they resided until their deaths.203

1950-1984:
John Berbach, Sr. was a life member of the Huntersland Volunteer Fire Department193
He was a member of Timothy Murphy Post 248 American Legion, Middleburg, NY193

1984:
John Walter Berbach Sr. resided in Huntersland (Middleburgh), Schoharie Cnty, NY at the time of his death on 2 Apr 1984.193 The recorded cause of death was Cardiopulmonary Arrest.195 John Berbach, Sr. died from cardiopulmonary arrest as a result of terminal lung cancer and its associated treatments.

An application to the Veterans Administration was made at the time of diagnosis attributing John Berbach’s lung cancer to nuclear testing radiation exposure during “Trinity,” the first “A-bomb” test in Alamogordo, New Mexico, 16 Jul 1945. The request for compensation was denied204 as his name did not appear on the list of 99 people who were known to be located in shelters 10,000 yards from the point of detonation. However, requests for his exact location and radiation exposure and requests for the location and radiation exposure of his unit were left unanswered. When time allows, these issues should be further explored. (Note also two mistakes in the response letter: name misspelled and the sentence noting response to “Mrs. Olga Burbach concerning her late husband’s exposure.” The response should have been to his son, John Berbach, Jr. who continued the inquiry after his Dad’s death. John, Sr.’s wife Olga had been deceased for years by the date of the letter.)204
