John Brownell and his family (probably his wife Frances Mariah and six children) live in the Town of Northampton, Montgomery Cnty, New York. The children probably include: Ira, Gilbert, Eunice, Mary, Charles and James.648

John Brownell and his family live in the Town of Northampton, Fulton Cnty, New York. His household includes six individuals, probably including himself (between age 50 and 60); his second wife, Francis Mariah (between 40 and 50); son, James (between 10 and 15); son, Charles Tucker (between 15 and 20); daughter, Caroline (between 5 and 10) and either daughter Eunice or Mary Gilbert (between 20 and 30.) Two individuals in the family are employed in “manufactures and trade” which is consistent with John being a blacksmith.649

John Brownell and his family of five live on one developed acre of land. Although not a farm, the family owns enough livestock to meet their own needs. They own six cattle, two of which are milked. They also own two hogs. They make their own butter and make their own cloth: fulled wool, wool and flannel that is not fulled, and linen (or possibly cotton or other thin cloth). They do not raise crops. Only John is able to vote and all in the family were born in New York State. Two of the three children attend school. 650

On 16 Mar 1847, John Brownell is assessed 1 ½ days to work on Road District 72 “which begins at the Fly Road thence north to the Town line east of Eli Manning” under Pathmaster Daniel Brewer.651

On 20 Sep 1850, the Brownells live in the Town of Northampton, Fulton Cnty, New York. John is a farmer and is 63 years old, Mariah is 50 and Caroline is 16. An 11-year-old young man, Henry Armstrong, lives with the family.638,89

According to the 1855 New York State Census, John is the owner of Fish House village property. John (age 66) and Mariah (age 57) Brownell live with daughter Caroline (age 21). John is a Farmer.636

On 14 Aug 1860, John Brownell (age 72), his wife Mariah (58) and their daughter Caroline (26) live in Northampton, Fulton Cnty, New York. John is a farmer and Caroline is a seamstress. The value of John’s real estate is high ($2000.00) compared to his immediate neighbors, although his personal value ($100.00) is about the same as his neighbors.652
1862:
On 10 Mar 1862, John Brownell and his wife, Maria, of the Town of Northampton, County of Fulton, sold to Caroline Baker (their daughter), of the same place, a parcel of land (1/4 acre) situated in the Town of Norhampton, bordered on the north by George Pease, on the east by H(?). W. Slocum, on the south by George Van Slyke and on the west by the Northampton Patent line in the center of the highway leading south from Fish House to Galway.653
On 10 Mar 1862, John Brownell and his wife, Maria, of the Town of Northampton, County of Fulton, sold to Caroline Baker (their daughter), of the same place a parcel of land (100 acres) situated in the Town of Broadalbin “being all that part of lot no. six in Sacandaga Patent” previously owned by Duncan McMartin Jr. of Broadalbin deceased, bordered by lands formerly owned by Samuel Thayer and also by the south shore of Fly Creek.654

As of 24 Jun 1865, Caroline is the owner of Fish House village property. John (age 76) and Mariah (age 69) Brownell live with daughter Caroline (age 30) and her husband Jonathan (age 30) Baker. John is a blacksmith, born in Dutchess Cnty, New York.639

On 4 Aug 1870, John (age 82) and his wife Maria (69) are living in Northampton, Fulton Cnty, New York with their daughter, Caroline Baker (36), son-in-law Jonathan Baker (35) and their grandaughter Cora Baker (1). John is retired, Maria helps keep house, Caroline keeps house and Jonathan is an “Ast-Right-?-”.655

She is widowed and blind. Also living in the household are Jonathan’s parents Charles (66) and Louisa Baker (62). Both Jonathan and Charles are farmers. Maria has an unreadable occupation listed in the census.644
