Notes for John REED
1799:
John Reed was about 19 years old and owned real estate in Providence, Saratoga Cnty, New York. He is listed on the tax rolls for 1799.865

ca 1800:
“About the turn of the Century or Early 1800’s John Reed a thin wiry Yankee of eastern N.Y. married Elizabeth Dunn… She, an extraordinary large woman + a full bred Scot.”866

1810:
John and Elizabeth Reed lived in Providence, Saratoga Cnty, NY.861,776

1816:
"James Reed came to Michigan in 1861, from the State of New York, Orleans county, and the town of Gaines. He was born May 22, 1816, in the town of Providence, Saratoga Co., N.Y., and son of a carpenter, John Reed, deceased at the age of 80 years. James received his early education in the town of Providence, and after residing in Orleans county he moved to Michigan, as above stated, and settled on his present property.”867

1820:
As of 7 Aug 1820, John Reed and family lived in the Town of Broadalbin, Montgomery Cnty, New York. 13 members of the household (all white) are listed in the 1820 Census: 5 males under age 10, 1 male age 10-15, 1 male age 16-25, 1 male age 26-44 (probably John), 1 male age 45 and older, 1 female under age 10, 2 females ages 10-15, and 1 female age 26-44 (probably Elizabeth). Three of those are listed as engaged in agriculture.868,869

1830:

John Reid and family lived in the Town of Broadalbin, Montgomery Cnty, New York in 1830. Ten members of the household (all white) are listed in the 1830 Census: 1 male age 5-7, 3 males ages 10-14, 2 males ages 15-19, 1 male age 20-29 and 1 male age 40-49 (probably John), 1 female age 5-9, and 1 female age 40-49 (probably Elizabeth).870,871

1850:
On 31 Jul 1850, John Reed (age 70) and his wife, Elizabeth (age 67) lived in the Town of Broadalbin, NY. The census lists John as a carpenter and his birthplace as Massachusetts. Elizabeth is listed as born in New York.858,872

1851:
On 10 Nov 1851, John and Elizabeth wrote that they safely returned home to Broadalbin “bush” from a visit to their son and his family in Eagle Harbor, Orleans Cnty, New York.873

1854:
Sometime in late 1854, John and Elizabeth moved to the Town of Galway with their daughter, Hannah Griffith and her family.862

1855:
As of 9 June 1855, John (age 75) and Elizabeth Reid (age 72) lived in the Town of Galway, Saratoga Cnty, New York with their daughter and son-in-law, Hannah (age 30) and Daniel (age 34) Griffith. They had lived there for eight months. It is prossible that John and Elizabeth had their own apartment as they are listed in the same dwelling, but as a separate family. John is listed as a carpenter and his birthplace is listed as Massachusetts. Elizabeth is listed as born in Saratoga Cnty. Hannah and her children (Henry, age 7 and Thomas, age 3) are listed as born in Fulton, County, while Daniel is listed as born in Schenectady Cnty. and was a farmer.862

1860:
On 18 Jul 1860 John Reed (age 80) and his wife, Elizabeth (age 76) still lived in Broadalbin, Fulton Cnty, NY. They live in the Broadalbin Post Office district. While Elizabeth is still listed as born in New York, John is listed as born in Connecticut.859,776

1861:
John’s wife Elizabeth died in Broadalbin, New York on 11 Apr 1861. Sometime after that, John moved to Eagle Harbor, New York near several of his children where he died in 1873.

1865:
John lived with his daughter ,Mary Reed Hawley and her husband Isaac, in Sherman, Chautauqua Cnty, New York.874
Military notes for John REED
1) “John Reed, father of Nelson Reed was an able seaman on the ship the Constitution ‘Old Ironsides’ in the War of 1812.”875 Possibly this was Seaman John Reed who served on Constitution in 1810-1811, but transferred to USS President in Mar 1811. (There was also a Quartermaster John Reed and a Marine Private John Reid who served on Constitution during the Barbary War, 1804-1805.)876 Note: John Reed is in the NYS census for 1810 as living in Providence, New York.

2) A John Reed was admitted to the Naval Hospital in New York for catarrah on 3 Feb 1814, age 33. He was a Landman on Gunboat 47. See U.S., Registers of Patients at Naval Hospitals, 1812-1934, Vol 06: 1813-1862, for John Reed, Ancestry.com.
