Notes for Thomas BILLINGHAM
1840-1842:
Daughter Jane Billingham was listed as a member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church as of 1 Feb 1840 and was excluded in June 1842 from the church by a letter from Stillwater. 887

1855:
As of 18 Jul 1855, Thomas Billingham (age 60), his wife, Catharine (age 58) and their son, Isa [Ira] (age 16) lived in the Town of Broadalbin, Fulton Cnty, New York. Thomas was a farmer and the family lived in a frame home. Thomas’s net worth was $399.00. Isa was a leather dresser. Thomas and Catharine were born in Greene Cnty and lived in the Town of Broadalbin for 30 years. 804

Thomas and Catharine’s daughter Maria (age 33), her husband John Reed (age 40), and their two children Jane E (age 15) and John E (age 1) also lived in the Town of Broadalbin, Fulton Cnty, New York. They lived about 6 households away from the Billinghams. John is also a farmer who owns his own land and his worth is listed as $1000 which is good in comparison to his neighbors. Their home is framed. John is listed in the census as having been born in Saratoga Cnty and has lived in the town for 35 of his 40 years. 804

1865:
As of 6 June 1865, John E. Reid (age 7) lived in the Town of Broadalbin, NY (south census enumeration district) with his mother Anna M. Reid (age 44), his married sister Jane Eliza Brown (age 25), and his brother-in-law Asa Brown (age 24) who was listed as the head-of-household and was a mitten cutter. Also living in the same frame house was John’s grandfather Thomas Billingham (age 70, born Green Cnty, New York) who was a laborer, his grandmother Catherine Billingham (age 68, born in Greene Cnty, New York) and his cousin Ira Billingham who was a soldier in the Civil War at that time. Ira was serving as a private in the 13th New York Heavy Artillery for a three year enlistment, having enlisted in 13 July 1864.775,888

According to the 1865 NYS census, Thomas and Catherine Billingham had twelve children.775

John R. (son) spoke of the home where he grew up in a letter to Maud Reed Buchanan:
“And my grand-parents brought up William Woodruff with the others. Grandpa Billingham, in driving to town, saw a crowd of people at a cottage. He halted his team and found upon inquiry that a man and wife had died and left a baby no one wanted. Grandpa said “I will take him” and so brought the baby home to grandma. You know it was only one more. 13 in all. That boy was William Woodruff and sometime if you care to know, I can tell you considerable about him. He did more for his foster-parents than their own did.”889
