Notes for William VAN NESS
Daniel and Lydia Brownell live with a W. H. Van Ness for a number of years in Northampton, New York.626 This is most likely the W. H. Van Ness mentioned since William’s grandmother was Lydia Follett Hammond who married Daniel Brownell according to the Roland Hammond Genealogy.591
1845:
On 10 May 1845, Daniel Brownell and Lydia Brownell of the Town of Northampton, County of Fulton, sell to John Chapman of the same place two acres of land, “this deed is the place that the widowe Martha Van Ness has occupied for the last eleven years”, bordered by the farm of Daniel Russell and the farm of Ezra Lyon.622
On 20 Nov 1845, Daniel Brownell and Lydia Brownell (his wife) “late Lydia Hammond and widowe of the late William Hammond” of Northampton, County of Fulton “let” their farm to Garret Van Ness of the same place; Garret Van Ness to be the tenant of the farm which was willed to Lydia at her former husband’s death. Daniel and Lydia are to be allowed to live in the home on the farm until their deaths, with all necessary food, heat, taxes and funeral expenses to be supplied and paid for by Van Ness. (Van Ness is to inherit the farm.)623
1847:
On 15 Nov 1847, an addendum to the 20 November 1845 agreement releases Garret L. Van Ness and assigns William H. Van Ness as tenant in lieu of Garret L. Van Ness.624
1850:
Daniel (age 93) and wife, Lydia (age 83), reside with W. H. Van Est (Van Ness591 625) and family in Northampton, Fulton Cnty, New York.626 W. H. Van Ness is the step-grandson of Daniel Brownell (Lydia Hammond Brownell’s grandson.591)
Since William H. Van Ness is Lydia’s grandson, it can be assumed that he is living with his grandmother and step-grandfather and will inherit the property left to his grandmother Lydia by his grandfather William Hammond. Garrett Van Ness must be Lydia and William Hammond’s son-in-law. The Van Ness family will (rightfully) inherit this property instead of the Brownells.
