Notes for Harriet BISHOP
1930:
Harriet and Wilber Becker owned a farm (see picture) which was slated to be torn down in order to make way for the Sacandaga Reservoir (near Mayfield, New York), more recently called the Great Sacandaga Lake. Wilber’s widow, Harriet, refused to move when the farm was taken by the Hudson River Regulating District by eminent domain. She died shortly before she had to move.8 The gates were closed on the Conklingville Dam to begin flooding the Sacandaga Valley on 27 March 1930. According to the recollections of Annamarie Gifford Reed about her childhood, Harry Gifford’s grandmother died while he and his family (including Annamarie) were on vacation at Caroga Lake, NY. The owner of the Caroga Lake camp where the family was staying drove the family to the train station.8
