Notes for Bertha (Birthie) A. COLLINS
Elmer and Bertha owned a farm on Jackson Summit Road, Town of Mayfield, NY561. Laurel Reed Berbach visited the farm often as a child before Elmer died and “Aunt Birthie” moved to an apartment in a house on the corner of School Street and 2nd Avenue, Mayfield, NY.2

Circa 1960’s:
Laurel Reed Berbach’s recollections:
Annamarie Reed was very close to “Aunt Birthie”. Aunt Birthie always had very dark hair, no grey, and she never colored her hair! Uncle Elmer always sat by a woodstove in the kitchen of their farmhouse, rocking in his rocker and smoking his cigar. All their condiments (ketchup, butter, etc.) were kept in the middle of the kitchen table and there was never any room to eat! Annamarie Reed always told stories about how Aunt Birthie always added extra salt to her butter to make it last longer. “If one cup was good, two cups were better!”2
