Notes for Lewis BROWNELL
1875-1921:
With the death of Orra Brownell, his younger son, Lewis, took charge of the firm [Orra Brownell and Sons (tannery)]. With him in partnership were his brothers, John, Orra, Jr., and Robert...The company became known as Lewis Brownell and Company, becoming Lewis Brownell and Brothers in 1875."662

"The Brownell brothers continued in the tanning business until late in the 1890's, when tanning became an uneconomical undertaking in the Adirondacks. Lumber was planed there until 1906, using a water wheel to run the plane. Then the plant was closed for good and most of the machinery removed. In 1919 and 1921, much of the tannery land was conveyed by the heirs of the Brownell Brothers to Isaac Brownell."662

“Lewis Brownell, using a stream in Jackson Summit (the West Stony Creek) had a hemlock bark tannery producing $22,000 worth of sole leather and consuming 800 cords of bark. At the same time, the Brownell family had other, larger establishments in Hamilton County.”663
