Notes for Barzill (Barzilla, Barzillai) GILBERT
1723:
On 7 Mar 1823 (recorded 14 July 1832), Gershom Gilbert of the Town of Northampton in the County of Montgomery sells to his son Brazilla Gilbert of the same Town a parcel of land (62 1/2acres) situated in the Town of Northampton, part of lot no. 17 of the Northampton Patent. The parcel is bounded on the west by the Sacandaga River, on the north by the land of John Chambers, on the east by the land of Charles Martin and on the south by the land of John Chambers, Jr.1113

1737:
On 23 Dec 1837, Brasilla Gilbert and his wife, Asenith, of the Town of Northampton, County of Montgomery sell to David Cooper of the City of Brooklyn, County of Kings a parcel of land (probably 20 acres) situated in the Town of Northampton and part of the farm “lately occupied by the family of Wm. Hoyt.” The land is on the east bank of the Sacandaga River and borders the house “lately occupied by Daniel Van Voorhis” and the farm “now occupied by Enoch Jacobs”.1137

1850:
Barilla is a Deacon of Beecher Hollow Church Meeting House until 1850. Originally the Beecher Hollow Church membership was part of a Presbyterian Church erected at Fish House. Membership in this Fish House Church grew and split. A new building was constructed in 1822 and became the Beecher Hollow Church. Church government changed 31 March 1831 from Presbyterian to Congregational Society. Gilbert moved to Northville in 1850.1135

The beginning of the Northville Presbyterian Church dates back to August 26, 1849 when “thirteen
people from the Presbyterian Churches of Fish House and Amsterdam, along with the Congregational Church of Edinburg presented letters of dismission and recommendation from those churches.” Barzilla and his son George Gilbert were two of the thirteen listed. Barzilla was one of the first elected elders and meetings were held in other area churches.1138

1870:
The 1870 Business Directory for Osborn’s Bridge lists Brazilla Gilbert as a retired farmer and cooper.1136
