William A. Bates was a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted at Albany, New York at the age of 33 on 2 Sep 1864. He was a private in Battery D of the 4th NY Heavy Artillery. He was wounded on 2 Apr 1865 at Sutherland Station, Virginia. He sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was mustered out from the U. S. General Hospital, Emery, Washington, D.C. on 19 June 1865.1243

He applied for an invalid pension on 2 Apr 1868, application #13260, certificate 91687(91689?).
His widow (Fredicka Bates) filed for a widow’s pension on 10 Feb 1912 from New York, application #980255, certificate #7800851243
