1850:
John Sprung/Spring (age 50) and his wife Anna M (age 45), along with their family live in Caroga, Fulton Cnty, New York. Their children living at home on 7 Nov 1850 are John (age 20), Cornelius (age 18), Abram (age 16), Elisabeth (age 14), Polly (age 11), Obadiah (age 9), Andrew (age 7), Valetus (age 5) and Jacob (age 1). John and his sons John, Cornelius, and Abram are all laborers.458

1851:
In early September 1851, John Sprung, who was living with his family in the Town of Caroga, New York, was arrested and charged with the murder of his son, John Sprung, Jr. John came home drunk from Newkirk Mills, berated and then assaulted his son and his wife. The assault resulted in his son’s death. His son was recovering from a fracture at the time.503

On 8 Dec 1851, John Sprung, age 51 and indicted for murder, along with two other inmates escaped from the Fulton County Jail. John was described as “5’7 inches high: had on straw hat, black coat, gray pants, and has sore eyes.” A reward of $150 for all three inmates or $50 for one was offered.504,505

On 20 Dec 1851, John Sprung’s nephew (unnamed) convinced John to turn himself in at which time he was returned to the Fulton County Jail. John was located in Albany, New York.506

1852:
John Sprung was convicted of murder in Fulton Cnty, New York by Judge Cady on 24 May 1852. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, sentence to expire on 23 May 1862.507 He was described at the time of his incarceration at the state prison at Dannemora, New York as 52 years old, 5’3 ¾” tall with black hair “quite grayish” and dark blue eye.508

1860:
As of 17 Aug 1860, John Sprung (John Springer) at age 40, farmer, was incarcerated at the New York State correctional facility in Dannemora, Clinton Cnty, New York for murder.509

On 3 Nov 1860, a pardon was granted and signed by Governor of New York State Edwin D. Morgan for John Sprung who was convicted of Manslaughter in the County of Fulton in May 1852, and who had served over 8 years of a ten year sentence at Clinton State Prison, Dannemora, New York.510

1865:
On 30 Jun 1865, John Sprong was 64 years old and was a servant living with the Charles E. Briggs family in Johnstown, Fulton Cnty, New York.497

1870:
John Sprung was a laborer living with a mason named Peter Jackson and his family in
Johnstown, Fulton Cnty, New York.511

1875:
As of 8 Jun 1875, John Sprung was living in the Fulton County Poor House in Johnstown, New York.512

John Sprung is 76 and was still living in the Fulton County, New York Poor House. 496
