John Sprung/Spring (age 50) and his wife Anna M (age 45), along with their family live in Caroga, Fulton Cnty, New York. Their children living at home on 7 Nov 1850 are John (age 20), Cornelius (age 18), Abram (age 16), Elisabeth (age 14), Polly (age 11), Obadiah (age 9), Andrew (age 7), Valetus (age 5) and Jacob (age 1). John and his sons John, Cornelius, and Abram are all laborers.458
1851:
In early September 1851, John Sprung, who was living with his family in the Town of Caroga, New York, was arrested and charged with the murder of his son, John Sprung, Jr. John came home drunk from Newkirk Mills, berated and then assaulted his son and his wife. The assault resulted in his son’s death. His son was recovering from a fracture at the time.503
On 8 Dec 1851, John Sprung, age 51 and indicted for murder, along with two other inmates escaped from the Fulton County Jail. John was described as “5’7 inches high: had on straw hat, black coat, gray pants, and has sore eyes.” A reward of $150 for all three inmates or $50 for one was offered.504,505
On 20 Dec 1851, John Sprung’s nephew (unnamed) convinced John to turn himself in at which time he was returned to the Fulton County jail. John was located in Albany, New York.506
1852:
John Sprung was convicted of murder in Fulton Cnty, New York by Judge Cady on 24 May 1852. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, sentence to expire on 23 May 1862.507 He was described at the time of his incarceration at the state prison at Dannemora, New York as 52 years old, 5’3 ¾” tall with black hair “quite grayish” and dark blue eye.508
1855:
As of 4 June 1855 Anna Maria is living in the Town of Caroga, Fulton Cnty, New York with her nine living children: Corneilus, age 23; Abram, age 20; Elisebath, age 18; Polly, age 18; Obdiah, age 15; Andrew, age 11; Phyletus, age 8; Jacob, age 6 and Norman, age 4. John, her husband is in jail for murdering their oldest child, John. The family has been living in the town for 8 years. No one is employed at this time.501
1860:
At age 54, Ann is a glovemaker and is living with her son Jacob (age 11) in Johnstown, Fulton Cnty., New York.499
1862-1865:
Anna’s son, Obadiah, served the Union during the Civil War. He enlisted in Johnstown, NY on 11 Aug 1862 at the age of 20.513 He was a private in the 115th Regiment, Company K of the New York Infantry. He died of wounds in a Rebel hospital in Petersburg, VA on 11 May 1865 while a prisoner of war.514,515,513,516
1867:
Anna applied for a Civil War Veteran’s Pension. Her son, Obediah, died of his wounds in a Rebel hospital in 1865.514,517
Obadiah’s mother, Anna M. Sprung applied for a pension (Application # 149027, Certificate # 103366) on 29(?) Jan(?) 1867.514
1870:
On 25 Jul 1870, Anna (age 64) was keeping house in Johnstown, Fulton Cnty, with her sons Jacob (age 21) and Norman (age 17) who were laborers. A Catherine Reid (age 65) was also living in the same household. A Reid family also lived next door.518
1875:
Anna M. Sprung (age 69) was living in the Town of Mohawk, Montgomery Cnty, New York with her son Jacob (age 26) and his wife Katie (age 18). Jacob is a farm laborer. An Annie Sprung (age 4) listed as Jacob’s sister is also living with them. Who is this? Annie M. Sprung was a widow on this date.498

At age 74, Annie was widowed and was living in the Town of Perth, Fulton Cnty, New York with her son Jacob (age 30), his wife Katie (age 24) and their two children Annie (age 5) and Norman (age 3). Jacob is a farm laborer.519
